Stem cell therapy for kidney failure or Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in Malaysia is an ongoing topic of research and is considered experimental by the medical community. Patients can find fee-for-service clinics that advertise stem cell therapy for kidney failure, but most of these clinics promote their own approach, which creates a lot of confusion among patients about how to compare their treatment options.

Some articles claimed that there is no evidence on stem cell and kidney failure. However, there are more than 100 studies published on "stem cell' and "kidney failure" on the National Library of Medicine. As of December 2023, more than 60 studies have been launched to investigate the benefits of stem cell therapy and kidney failure. and more than 30 studies on stem cell treatment for kidney diseases under the U.S. Clinical Trial Registry.

Many papers have reported on the potential use of stem cells of different origins for treating many different pathologies, including kidney diseases.

Several clinical trials have confirmed the safety and tolerability of stem cells, and in particular of MSC-based therapies (Mesenchymal Stem Cell), in patients with renal diseases and kidney transplants (Int J of Mol Sci. 2019).

Cautionary Remarks 

Stem cell therapy for kidney failure is a new and is under on-going research. When a clinic gives you promises that you will see gains, and/or claims that the same stem cell therapy can cure everything, run! In real medicine, results are not guaranteed and there are no cure-alls. Be wary of advice from people who have “done their research” by watching YouTube videos. Real research is published in peer-reviewed journals, and you can search the journals via PubMed or Google Scholar.
