Diabetes Center at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus | Ohio 2019

Cleveland Clinic's Diabetes Center was created as part of our Endocrinology & Metabolism Institute, and is located in a free-standing building near Cleveland Clinic's main campus. With its own attached parking lot, the Diabetes Center offers patients fast and convenient access to our diabetes services in a relaxed office setting.

The Diabetes Center provides patients access to a multidisciplinary team, including endocrinologists, diabetic educators, dieticians and a nurse practitioner. The goal of the Diabetes Center is to encourage patients to receive early specialty care and education – getting them on the right track with their diabetes management before returning them to their primary care physicians for ongoing management. The Diabetes Center offers both individual and group diabetes education classes year round for patients and their families. Another convenience offered is retinal eye screenings on-site to provide screening for diabetic eye conditions.

Cleveland Clinic's Diabetes Center is located at 10685 Carnegie, Cleveland, OH 44106.

Diabetes Center Will Focus on Early Detection and Effective Disease Management

The state-of-the art 9,000-square-foot facility located at 10685 Carnegie Ave. houses a multidisciplinary team of endocrinologists, diabetes educators, dietitians, nurse practitioners and a podiatrist - all dedicated to assisting patients effectively manage this chronic and often debilitating disease. Endocrinologist Robert Zimmerman, MD, will lead the team.

“This new center consolidates Cleveland Clinic’s main campus diabetes specialists under one roof to help people with diabetes live longer and healthier lives,” said Robert Zimmerman, MD. “Our aim is to ensure newly diagnosed diabetics have the tools they need to manage their disease from the onset and to decrease their risk of developing diabetes-related complications. We want them to experience a better quality of life.”

According to the American Diabetes Association nearly 24 million U.S. adults and children, or 7.8% of the total population, have diabetes; 5.7 million of those cases are undiagnosed. Another 57 million people have pre-diabetes. Better Health Greater Cleveland, a community-focused chronic disease management collaboration between Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente and many others, reports that more than 100,000 people in Cuyahoga County are living with diabetes.

Nationally, diabetes and diabetes-related care costs our healthcare system $174 billion each year. And this does not take into account the personal hardship uncontrolled or unmanaged diabetes has on patients and their families.

“Early and proper intervention is essential to treating – and possibly reducing - the levels of diabetes in this country,” said Dr. Zimmerman. “Educating the patient about the importance of implementing lifestyle changes is an essential component of our treatment plan. Patients who are actively involved in disease management have the most long-term success.”

This approach is backed by research showing that emphasis on good control of blood sugar is most effective in treating newly diagnosed diabetes patients.

Education is a core component of the new Diabetes Center. Staff will host individual and group diabetes education classes, conduct retina screenings and feature cutting edge glucose monitoring technology. Through the center, patients will learn how to monitor glucose regularly and adjust insulin doses as needed. They also will learn to detect diabetes-related complications – all in an attempt to achieve a healthier quality of life.

The Diabetes Center is just one way Cleveland Clinic is expanding its endocrinology services throughout the health system.

“Patients need access to high-quality care that is convenient to their homes, so the primary care physician is key. But patients with diabetes also get benefit from ready access at an early stage to diabetes specialists,” Laurence (Ned) Kennedy, MD, Chairman of the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism in Cleveland Clinic’s Endocrinology & Metabolism Institute. “We are pleased to offer this new option for patients and their families. We intend to work with primary care physicians in providing timely specialist consultation.”

For more information on the Diabetes Center, patients can call 216.444.6568 or 1.800.223.2273, Ext. 46568.
