Let’s understand how an area known as ‘hunger center’, located in your brain works. The body has been designed to restore balance for various functions in your body. Your body temperature is maintained at 37 degree Celsius internally irrespective of the outside temperature. You feel thirsty when your body realizes that the water level in your body is low. You feel hungry when your body senses that your blood sugar level is low. Once you start eating and the blood sugar level goes up to the balanced state, your brain will receive a message from the blood vessels that the blood sugar level is OK now and the brain will make you feel satisfied.

So, what is that got to do with weight management? Your brain has everything to do with weight management. It’s your brain that decides what you will drink or eat on a daily basis regardless of what your doctor tells you. The main issue here is that a craving does not mean you're hungry!

The hunger center tells us to find and eat food. The hunger center in the brain responds quickly to fewer calories or falling blood sugar by stimulating our desire to seek out food, particularly sweet snacks that rapidly return our blood sugar to normal.

A typical ‘dream’ diet consists of a main meal PLUS candy and chocolates as dessert and a sweet soft drink. Such diet contains highly refined carbohydrates and sugar, which causes low blood sugar in the affected person after a meal. With these ‘low blood sugar’ episodes you feel weakness, confusion, lack of concentration, heart palpitations, cold hands and feet and a hunger for sugar. Many overweight and obese people suffer from these episodes, but may not even be aware that this is what gets the vicious cycle going.

Unfortunately, as soon as we eat the sugary treat our body releases large amounts of a hormone called insulin, which sweeps the sugar out of our bloodstream and stores it as fat. Our blood sugar drops again and the cravings return.

So as a summary; break the vicious cycle and reduce your intake of ‘sweet’ food and drinks.
